The renowned New Mexico Highlands University, better known as NMHU, was established in 1893 and is a prominent university in Las Vegas. Its original name was New Mexico Normal School, which it retained until 1902 when it changed to New Mexico Normal University. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools' Higher Learning Commission has granted this public university accreditation.
