Established as a high school that offered programs tying back to its agricultural roots in 1909, the Southern Arkansas University has come a long way. It was turned into the Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1925, when it was allowed to add two years of college work to its secondary school curriculum.
In 1950, it was finally turned into a four-year degree institution and was named as the Southern State College. Later on, after it merged with the Southwest Technical University, it was rechristened as Southern Arkansas University.
With a wide range of courses, the SAU offers programs that are unique to every individual. Keeping the changing trends and professions in mind, Southern Arkansas University tends to get on board with programs that will entice and interest the new age of students.
It currently offers around 70 undergraduate programs. This includes a one-of-a-kind engineering program and a digital cinema program. Along with this, it also offers Musical Theatre and pre-professional track programs.
