The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) was established in 1947. It is a public research university and is a part of the University of North Carolina system. Initially, it opened as a junior college that provided education to World War II veterans. In 1963 it became a four-year liberal arts college via legislation from the North Carolina General Assembly. Again in 1969, the school became a university and was then renamed the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The school has three campuses, the main campus at Wilmington, an extension campus in Jacksonville, and the Center for marine science near Myrtle Grove.
