In Detroit, Michigan, there is a private Catholic institution called the University of Detroit Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) are its sponsors. The largest Catholic institution in Michigan, the university was established in 1877. More than a hundred academic degrees are available at its three locations.
The institution supports 17 NCAA Division I sports for both men and women in terms of athletics. It belongs to the Horizon League. The Society of Jesus, led by John Baptist Miège, S.J., established "Detroit College" close to Detroit's downtown in 1877, marking the beginning of Mercy.
