Public University Frostburg State University is founded in 1898. In the state's Appalachian highlands, the University is the only four-year college or university west of the Baltimore–Washington corridor. Frostburg, founded by Maryland State Senator John Leake, was chosen as the site because it provided the finest location without incurring any costs to the state. The organization now primarily functions as a residential university. The University provides 47 undergraduate majors, 16 graduate degrees, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership, with an enrolment of about 4,858 students.
