Fairfield University is a private Catholic University founded by the Society of Jesus in 1942. It has nearly 5000 students enrolled, including international students from over 20 countries. The University’s educational mission is to provide a liberal arts education based on Jesuit ideals. The College of Arts and Sciences, the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, the School of Engineering, and the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions are the five academic schools that offer programmes at Fairfield University.

Undergraduate students can choose from 43 majors and 19 minors, with 41 graduate programmes to choose from. Fairfield University is a partner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), with the majority of its athletic programmes being classified as NCAA Division I. Baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's crew, men's and women's cross country, and many other varsity sports are sponsored by the University.
The University promotes environmental sustainability. It became the first university in the United States to deploy Tomra UNO reverse vending machines (RVM), an all-in-one bottle deposit recycling machine, in August 2009.
