Institution founded in 1794. Before taking its current name, this University was known as Bount College in 1794, East Tennessee College in 1807, and East Tennessee University in 1840. The institution was closed during the Civil War, but under the Morrill Act of 1862, the state sponsored its reopening in 1869. Women were first admitted to the institution for a limited time in 1892, followed by the admission of African-American students in 1952. The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, the Universities Research Association, and the Oak Ridge Association University have all accredited it.
UTHSC has formed a four-tier purpose of education, research, clinical care, and public service, all aiming to enhance Tennesseans' health. Six colleges make up UTHSC: Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy.
The objective of UTHSC remains the same: to teach compassionate and competent health care professionals to meet the needs of Tennessee. It's difficult to keep up with the growing need for healthcare professionals, but UTHSC has continued developing new initiatives and expanding current programs to satisfy these demands.
In a variety of fields, UTHSC academic members have received national recognition. A Nobel Laureate is also on the UTHSC faculty.
At seven teaching hospitals in Memphis and Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, and the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, UTHSC students gain hands-on experience and contribute to excellent clinical care. The UTHSC's modus operandi is "bench-to-bedside," with academics from all six colleges translating their research into clinical treatment.
